Directions: Below are the ten words from Chapter 17. Each of the ten words is accompanied by three sentences that use a form of the word. Only one of these sentences uses the word correctly, the other two use it incorrectly. Read all three sentences. Then click the button to the left of the sentence that uses the word correctly.

You may change your answers as you see fit. When you are satisfied that all answers are correct, click the "Submit" button at the end of the exercise. You cannot resubmit the exercise after that point.

Food Chat

gluttony

Our dog is a glutton—she eats everything in front of her, even if it makes her sick.

During a recent visit, we discovered the gluttony of New Orleans and bought a Cajun cookbook.

If Glenda continues with her gluttony, she'll starve herself to death.

2.

ravenous

When Rocky saw the dent in his new car, he launched into a ravenous outburst.

She bride looked ravenously beautiful when she walked down the aisle in her wedding dress.

The public appears ravenous for news about affairs involving celebrities: The tabloids are just filled with them.

3.

cuisine

French food is too cuisine for me—I prefer simpler fare.

Cuisines in which rice is a staple have known health benefits.

I lent Chuck my cuisine for his cookout.

4.

gourmet

Gerry is a gourmet who doesn't care how food tastes as long as there is plenty of it.

Jenny now works as a gourmet at the new Italian restaurant.

The new restaurant is my kind place because it offers gourmet food at affordable prices.

5.

gourmand

Until he met Melanie, Mel was a gourmand who wasn't interested in food.

He's a gourmand who nevertheless manages to stay slim.

I miss grandma's gourmand cooking.

6.

succulent

I don't care about the dangers of eating beef—a succulent steak is still the best food in the world to me.

For decades, health experts have pointed to the succulence of eating fruits and vegetables every day.

Vegetables always turn succulent in my refrigerator and I have to throw them out after a few days.

7.

aromatic

Use a pinch of sugar to make a spaghetti sauce less aromatic.

The paper's restaurant reviews are too aromatic in my opinion.

I love the aromatic smells that typically come out of the kitchen in an Indian restaurant.

8.

condiment

After finishing his dinner, the guest offered condiments to his host.

Please put the condiment tray in the center of the table!

Brunch typically starts with a condimentary drink.

9.

confection

Confectioners' sugar is extra fine so that it can be used in icings.

Shrimp cocktail is still my favorite confection.

After his confection, Chris is no longer able to cook.

10.

gastronomy

The food is good, but the prices are gastronomical.

I can't eat spicy foods because they give me gastronomy.

Since he enjoyed his mother's cooking so much, he chose a career in gastronomy.
