Directions: Below are the ten words from Chapter 6. Each of the ten words is accompanied by three sentences that use a form of the word. Only one of these sentences uses the word correctly, the other two use it incorrectly. Read all three sentences. Then click the button to the left of the sentence that uses the word correctly.

You may change your answers as you see fit. When you are satisfied that all answers are correct, click the "Submit" button at the end of the exercise. You cannot resubmit the exercise after that point.

Money Talk

fiscal

I can't believe she's fiscal enough to max out her credit card.

The products sold by the company were excellent; however, the company's management was fiscally irresponsible and that led them into brankruptcy.

Only the truly fiscal would buy a thousand-dollar coat in a luxury store.

2.

extravagant

Extravagance is just an excessive form of frugality.

He was so extravagant that he struck up a conversation with anyone sitting next to him in a bar or waiting room.

Extravagant weddings are becoming more and more popular, even with people who can ill afford them.

3.

lucrative

When he landed the lucrative contract, the president threw an extravagant party for his entire company.

The architect was given a budget that was too lucrative for what he was asked to do.

There's a fine line between being lucrative and being funny.

4.

entrepreneur

The meeting was restricted to the entrepreneurs of the firm; its owner was not allowed to attend.

Come on—be a good entrepreneur and give me some of that chocolate!

It's so easy to start a business over the Internet that even teenagers can become entrepreneurs over night.

5.

revenue

In her revenue of the film, she stressed its suspenseful plot and lively dialogue.

Revenue from the best-selling novel allowed the author to give up her regular job and become a full-time writer.

The store closed because revenue was too high.

6.

prosper

Roses need a great deal of care if they are to prosper.

A city that loses population year after year can only prosper.

The committee found the proposal prosperous and accepted it without much debate.

7.

compensation

I want compensation, I don't want money.

I love the expression of complete compensation on my cat's face when she's had her dinner and is lying in her favorite box.

I will compensate you for all expenses connected to this job.

8.

deficit

A deficit of calcium in a person's diet can lead to bone damage.

I hope the instructor will not notice the deficits in my argument.

A company running a deficit is making a tidy profit.

9.

cartel

My sister and her husband are a great cartel because they seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company.

It's illegal for companies to form a cartel with the goal of fixing prices.

This morning, a cartel of geese flew over our house and woke me up with their shrill cries.

10.

endow

I was so depressed that I decided to endow myself with a huge ice cream sundae.

The endowment of a college is the money it spends on its annual budget.

The National Endowment for the Arts is charged with giving financial support to artists and institutions that could not do their work without such support.
