Directions: Below are the ten words from Chapter 24. Each of the ten words is accompanied by three sentences that use a form of the word. Only one of these sentences uses the word correctly, the other two use it incorrectly. Read all three sentences. Then click the button to the left of the sentence that uses the word correctly.

You may change your answers as you see fit. When you are satisfied that all answers are correct, click the "Submit" button at the end of the exercise. You cannot resubmit the exercise after that point.

Speaking of Government

legislation

One does not need a law degree to become a legislator.

The main duty of a judge is to legislate.

A legislature is a collection of laws passed by Congress.

2.

filibuster

A filibuster can only block a vote—it cannot force a vote.

The senator filibustered his colleagues with a fiery speech.

A filibuster is an amendment to a law before Congress.

3.

constituent

Constituents are congressional aides assisting legislators* in their daily work.

The constituents of a senator are the registered voters in his or her state.

E-mail has given members of Congress a new and powerful means to stay in touch with their constituents.

4.

lobby

For better or worse, lobbyists have gained a significant amount of influence in Washington.

A legislator's hobby is called his or her "lobby."

The main task of diplomats is to lobby foreign governments.

5.

liberal

A liberal is a person who has liberated a country from an oppressive government.

Liberals strongly support government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.

Liberalism is a form of taxation.

6.

conservative

A conservative is a person who has attended a conservatory.

Staunch* conservatives reject government control in any form, which includes the current Social Security program.

Conservatism is a Christian denomination.

7.

tariff

If you add up local, state, and federal taxes, you get the tariff paid by citizens to their government on an annual basis.

Tariff is income not reported to the federal government.

Almost all governments impose tariffs on some imported goods to protect certain industries from foreign competition.

8.

electoral

The electoral system in the U.S. makes it possible to have a president whose party does not have the majority in Congress.

The parliament of a country is also called its electorate.

An electoral vote is a majority vote.

9.

judicial

Shows with a strong judicial content, such as Law and Order, have been popular for a long time.

When it comes to selecting a spouse, one cannot be too judicial.

The judicial system in the U. S. does not include its law courts.

10.

subsidy

Some industries can survive only with government subsidies.

People can subsidize without food for days, but not without water.

Subsidy farmers grow just enough to feed their own families.
